EDITOR’S NOTE: A number of significant developments have taken place, or are about to take place, in Jamaica’s healthcare sector; building upon what is already a distinquished reputation in the field.

In this edition, #HealthCaribbean highlights some of these developments. Most notable is the collaboration of the governments of India and Jamaica involving a proposed US$260M health tourism project in Montego Bay to be undertaken by a member of the Indian diaspora over the next five years.

The Faculty of Medical Science of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, has signed a number of MOUs one of which is “with Novamed Inc., a company that drives healthcare venture and innovation”. Back in the 1950’s, Yvette Fay Francis-McBarnette, born of Jamaican parents, became the second black woman to enter the Yale School of Medicine and became a pioneer in the treatment of sickle cell disease.

Finally, superstar Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake has now opened the Yohan Blake Health and Wellness Centre to provide world-class treatment and services to athletes for their recovery from injuries, And, the Government has promised the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines within the next two weeks.
