IslandsCaribbean Weekend ed. 2021-02-26

EDITOR’S NOTE: In our last issue, we began a series on developments in the Caribbean travel sector. In that issue we looked at developments in the Greater Antilles and saw that, of the three hotel chains presented, only Marriot International was proceeding with its building plans.

In this issue, #IslandsCaribbean concludes the series by looking at six smaller Caribbean islands, namely: Antigua, St. Lucia, Grenada, The Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, and Cayman Islands. The first two are proposed renovations by Marriott International, which were not previously mentioned.

In no instance is proposed construction being suspended. The DART’s Hotel Indigo in the Cayman Islands is undergoing the planning approval process, even though Cayman has suspended the planned re-opening of their borders next month, and a new date for the re-opening has not been made public.

In our previous issue, we questioned the rational of suspending new construction in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. The developments presented here also do not substantiate those decisions: scaling down the projects maybe, but definitely not suspending them for the reasons given.
