InfrastruCaribe Weekday ed. 2021-03-09

NWC at work

EDITOR’S NOTE: In this issue, #InfrastruCaribe continues the series on utilities in the Caribbean, and begins what will be a two part presentation on energy. This part of the presentation is essentially about Liquified Natural Gas ( #LNG). The final part will be on other renewable energy sources. As usual, five articles are presented: three of these are on the Dominican Republic and one each for Guyana and Jamaica respectively.

We feature the preparation of a tender for a 800 megawatt gas-fired generator plant in Manzanillo, Dominican Republic. The two other articles deal with their Senate’s approval of a US$155 Million loan to the electricity sector to increase its “operational efficiency”, and the private proposition for the interconnection of their electricity grid to that of Haiti.

Otherwise, Guyana is undertaking a number of studies aimed at constructing a gas-to-shore facility within two years; and, a combined heat and power generation plant is being constructed for a private firm in Jamaica that is said to be a first of its kind there and is capable of reducing carbon emissions by up to 30 percent.
