EDITOR’S NOTE: As the financial year for most, if not all, Caribbean governments draws to a close, #EduCaribbean begins a series on politics in Caribbean education. This will likely be a two-part newsletter, and we begin with a look at Jamaica, Barbados, and Cuba.

Of note is a new joint report by the World Bank and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) which revealed that Caribbean and other governments are cutting their education budgets in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our headline taken from the Jamaica Gleaner reads: “$114 Billion Invested In Education; Sector Gets Largest Share Of Budget”. Like Jamaica, Barbados’ planned expenditure on education is also a leading budget item for the new financial year starting April 1.

Otherwise, Jamaica’s opposition party is calling for the island’s Ministry of Education to develop a common policy to for the entire student body. Also, the governments of Cuba and Senegal are deliberating areas for future cooperation in education.
