EduCaribbean Weekday ed. 2021-03-29

Sir Phillip Sherlock Creative Arts Centre

EDITOR’S NOTE: In our last newsletter, #EduCaribbean commenced a series on politics in education in the Caribbean. This issue, is the final in that series. We cover three countries, namely: Jamaica, Barbados and The Bahamas. Of our five articles, three articles are on Jamaica, while there is one on each of the others.

Our headline, taken from the Jamaica Observer, is titled: “Work Ongoing To Address Educational Underachievement In Boys”. Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Fayval Williams advised of an effort being made at policy and at institutional levels to address this underachievement.

Of the two other articles on Jamaica, one speaks to the government after numerous attempts finally seeming prepared to submit a teaching council bill to parliament this year. The next speaks to implementation of the Government’s Own-Your-Own-Device programme scheduled to commence a week following its announcement.

In Barbados, their Ministry of Education is involved in training educators to teach special needs students. And in The Bahamas, their Ministry of Education has made arrangements with the University of The Bahamas to temporarily accommodate a primary school whilst their building is being renovated.
