EDITOR’S NOTE: Edition 2021-02-22 was the last time #EduCaribbean looked at academic achievements in the Caribbean or by Caribbean national. In this newsletter, we re-visit the topic. Four of the five articles are from the University of the West Indies (UWI): three from the Mona Campus in Jamaica. The remaining article is about a Jamaican national at Boston University.
Our headline taken from the Trinidad and Tobago Newsday reads: “UWI Vice-Chancellor To Serve On UN Project”. It speaks of Professor Sir Hilary Beckles — Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies — the sole Barbadian, being invited to serve as an expert on the United Nations’ Futures of Higher Education Project.
The sole article not based in the Caribbean speaks of Oliver McRae — a Jamaican postdoctoral associate at Boston University (BU) — and Associate Professor James Bird, having published a study which “may have a bearing on the transmission of COVID-19”. The remaining articles speak of the achievement of five lecturers at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
