EDITOR’S NOTE: Earlier this week, #InfrastruCaribe began a series on transportation infrastructure in the Caribbean, and a three-part series on ground transportation. Edition 2021-04-06 dealt with ground transportation in Guyana. This newsletter will deal with ground transportation in the Dominican Republic. Guyana and the Dominican Republic are the only Caribbean economies that are expected to grow this year.

The headline taken from the Dominican Today reads: “Government Studies Construction Of Light Rail, Monorail/BTR For Santiago And SD With Private Investment”. It speaks of a feasibility study being undertaken on different modalities of transportation for Santo Domingo (SD) and Santiago which is to be implemented in a public-private-partnership.

Nevertheless, transportation to the tourist centres are of concern. And, RD$2 billion is to be invested this financial year to construct an expressway to Punta Cana which includes two new bridges. Also, bad roads hamper development of the South region. SD beltway and beltways of the different provinces is envisioned to reduce travel time of arriving visitors from the airport to their respective destinations to no more than two hours.
