by | Apr 12, 2021

EDITOR’S NOTE: In March, #HealthCaribbean took a look at COVID-19 vaccinations in independent Caribbean states in our edition 2021-03-18. At that time, vaccinations were underway in the Caribbean. But, no deliveries of vaccines had yet been made under the COVAX facility. This newsletter now looks at the COVAX initiate one month later.

These independent states are all members of CARIFORUM. Six states are covered here, namely: The Dominican Republic, Guyana, Suriname, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, and Trinidad and Tobago. All had received a first shipment of vaccines under COVAX. But, PAHO warns that deliveries to the Americas are insufficient to even protect the vulnerable groups.

Our headline, taken from Dominican Today, reads: “91,200 Doses Of COVID Vaccine Arrive In Dominican Republic”. The Dominican Republic was the worst hit of all CARIFORUM states. It has a population of over Ten Million people. It should therefore be undertood how insufficient this shipment is to them. They previously had received vaccines from China.
