EDITOR’S NOTE: In March, #IslandsCaribbean took a look at the state of the travel industry in edition 2021-03-26. As figures for the winter quarter become available, we takes a look at the trend and probable outlook for 2021. Two locations are visited, namely: The Dominican Republic and Cuba.

Our headline, taken from the Jamaica Gleaner, reads: “David Jessop | Regional Tourism Outlook Brightening”. Referring to data from an Aruba-based consultancy called Tourism Analytics, Jessop concludes that “the worst may now be past for some of the independent Caribbean’s largest tourism markets”.

The Dominican Republic has already started showing signs of this recovery with a 3.4 percent increase in visitor arrivals in March 2021 compared to March 2020. Otherwise, Cuban officials met with Trip.com — a leading travel company — in March to discuss plans to promote Chinese Tourism to the island.

Another survey conducted by SchengenVisaInfo.com, conducted in February and March, suggests that the majority of travelers under forty-five years old would travel internationally once borders reopen. But, their reason to travel was not for a traditional vacation, rather to visit friends and family in other countries.
