EDITOR’S NOTE: Early in March, #InfrastruCaribe featured renewable energy infrastructure in the Caribbean in our edition 2021-03-12. This newsletter will do the same as we continue our series on utilities, which started last week in edition 2021-04-23. Articles cover five locations, namely: The Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cuba, Cayman Islands, and Puerto Rico.
Our headline, taken from Dominican Today, reads: “AES Dominicana Launches New Visual Identity And Energy Projects”. AES Dominicana — the energy giant of the Dominican Republic — is planning to commission more than 200 megawatts of solar energy over the next three years. Regionally, AES is also investing in renewables such as wind, hydraulic and battery storage.
However, all of our articles here focus on solar energy. A Virgin Group company — BMR Energy — will restore a damaged 6.4-MW solar facility in the U.S. Virgin islands. Deltro Energy Solutions, S.A. — a Canadian company registered in Barbados — will design, build, and operate at least 19 solar parks throughout Cuba.
In the Cayman Islands, a programme permitting customers to generate solar energy and sell it back to the Utility provider at a subsidised rate has been extended after new grid capacity was approved for the scheme. Finally, Puerto Rican village of Castañer has been selected for a new microgrid project involving installation of a solar energy and battery storage facility there.
