EduCaribbean Weekend ed. 2021-05-06

Sir Phillip Sherlock Creative Arts Centre

EDITOR’S NOTE: In the beginning of February, #EduCaribbean featured Guyana in our edition 2021-02-11. This newsletter does the same. The topics covered are diverse: from placement examinations to high schools to award of post-graduate degrees; from infrastructure for face-to-face classes to virtual learning platforms; from students to educators.

Our headline, taken from iNews Guyana, reads: “UG Graduates First 2 PhD Candidates”. Dr. Cecil Boston and Dr. Rajini Kurup are the first Doctors of Philosophy graduants at the University of Guyana (UG): both in Biodiversity. The Research Programme is offered jointly between the Faculties of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences and Agriculture and Forestry.

In other news, Guyanese-American Dr. Esther Haynes-Tross is to return to Guyana to lead the Cecil and Olga Haynes School of Excellence. She would would like to encourage “other Guyanese in the Diaspora to return to their homeland to share their skills, and talents to improve the lives of others”.

Otherwise, smart classroom commissioned at the President’s College is the first in Education District 4. The Ministry of Education has also launched an online learning platform initially targeting grade 7 teachers and students. And finally, they have canceled grades 2, 4, and 9 placement exams due to the pandemic.
