IslandsCaribbean Weekend ed. 2021-05-07

EDITOR’S NOTE: The pandemic has impaired global tourism and left all stakeholders longing for the recovery of the sector. So, #IslandsCaribbean features recovery of Caribbean Tourism in this newsletter. Two destinations are covered, namely: the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Besides the headline, each destination is presented in two articles.

Our headline, taken from the Dominican Today, reads: “Dominican Republic, Cancun And Jamaica Lead The Way In Caribbean Tourism Recovery”. This sentiment was expressed by Encarna Piñero, CEO of the Piñero group: one of Spain’s hotel companies that is very prominent in the Caribbean.

In the first quarter of 2021, the Dominican Republic had approximately 700,000 visitors arrivals, the majority of which occured in March, exceeding arrivals on the same month last year. According to Daniel Hernández — Regional VP of AMResorts Operations — occupancy of their Dominican Republic hotels have shown growth for over 8 weeks.

According to David Cummings — VP and head of Jamaica’s Sygnus Real Estate and Project Finance — now is the time to invest in a major hospitality project in Jamaica. Finally, Half Moon’s 57-room Eclipse addition in Jamaica, and 3 other Caribbean resorts, have been adjudged to be among the world’s top new resorts for 2021 in Travel + Leisure’s 16th annual ‘It List’.
