EDITOR’S NOTE: Approaching mid-April, #EduCaribbean featured Caribbean educators in our edition 2021-04-19. This edition does the same. Three countries are covered, namely: Jamaica, Guyana and Barbados. Three of our five articles are about educators that are Jamaican nationals. There is one apiece for the two remaining countries.
Our headline, taken from the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), reads: “Jamaican Named Chancellor Of Heriot-Watt University In Scotland”. Professor Sir Geoff Palmer — Jamaica’s Honorary Consul to Scotland — will be inauguration as the new Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University, in Edinburgh, Scotland, during their bicentennial celebrations in October 2021.
Shara McCallum — Jamaican liberal arts professor of English — has been chosen to serve as Penn State laureate for the 2021-22 academic year: making her the first black woman to do so. And, Rear Admiral Peter Brady — Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ) — has been re-appointed to the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University.
Dr. Esther Haynes-Tross — Guyanese-American — will head the Cecil and Olga Haynes School of Excellence. Barbadian Professor Sir Hilary Beckles has been reappointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI). And, Professor Clive Landis will become the first non-Caribbean person to become principal of UWI Cave Hill, Barbados.
