EDITOR’S NOTE: At the beginning of April, #IslandsCaribbean featured the Dominican Republic in our edition 2021-04-13. This newsletter does the same. Three developments are covered, namely: a sustainable tourism model in Pedernales; ground-breaking for the Panorama Lake tourist complex; and, Dominican Republic’s first Marriott AC Hotel.
Our headline, taken from the Dominican Today, reads: “US $1 Billion Investment For Pedernales’ Tourism Take-Off”. Infrastructure works estimated to cost US$1 billion is to commence mid-year in the southern province of Pedernales to develop the area into a major tourism destination. The second stage of works is estimated to cost US$1.6 billion.
A Mexican delegation of investors travelled to the Dominican Republic to learn first hand about the sustainable tourism model planned for Pedernales. The delegation visited the area proposed for the first stage of works, which will include a 3,000-room hotel, international airport, other infrastructure and service works.
In Punta Cana, President Luis Abinader participated in a ground-breaking ceremony for the Panorama Lake tourist complex at Bávaro, estimated to cost over US$100 million. In August, Marriott International will also open their first AC Hotel in the Dominican Republic. This 129-room hotel will cater to the “Bleisure traveler” — mixing business with leisure.
