EDITOR’S NOTE: Towards the end of March, #InfrastruCaribe featured Caribbean emergency response in our edition 2021-04-02. This newsletter does the same, as we continue our series on social infrastructure. Two countries are covered, namely: Jamaica and Cayman Islands. Jamaica has four of the five articles. Additional content can be found in our Twitter feed.
Our headline, taken from the Jamaica Observer, reads: “Highway Will Force Relocation Of Bull Bay Police Station: Chang”. National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang, referring to the south coast highway project, said: “The Bull Bay station is likely to be demolished in development of the south coast highway. Therefore, there will have to be a new station quickly”.
Two police stations were rehabilitated. Work on the Adelphi Police Station in St. James is complete. The project was grant funding by the European Union at a cost of US$278,000. Work on the Franklin Town station in Kingston “nears completion”. This project is funded by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) in collaboration with the Ministry of National Security.
Works on the Barnett Street Fire Station in St. James is projected to be completed by July. The project is funded by JSIF at a cost of US$3.62 million and is within budget. This Cayman government has issued a request for proposals to upgrade the Cayman Brac fire station. Proposed works include construction of approximately 308 m2 building and external works.
