IslandsCaribbean Weekday ed. 2021-05-25

by | May 18, 2021

EDITOR’S NOTE: In our edition 2021-05-21 last week, #IslandsCaribbean started a series on developments in the Caribbean hospitality sector, apart from the Dominican Republic. This newsletter concludes that series. Five countries are covered, namely: Belize, Curacao, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, and Sint Maarten.

Our headline, taken from the Caribbean Journal, reads: “The First-Ever Marriott Resort In Belize Is Now Open”. The new Alaia Belize has officially opened as the first Marriott International branded resort in Belize. This 155-bed resort is part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, and is built on over 20 acres of beachfront property overlooking the popular Ambergris Caye.

Wyndham is adding two more Caribbean resorts to its portfolio: the Kunuku All-Inclusive Resort in Curacao, and The Buccaneer in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Both were existing resorts converted to Wyndham’s Trademark Collection. The former is now open and has a 189-bed capacity with 24 additional apartments. The latter will have 130 rooms and suites.

Otherwise, Cayman Island’s largest landowner — DART Real Estate — has not yet revealed its plans for the former (now-derelict) Hyatt site along the Seven Mile Beach area. But, The Morgan Resort in Sint Maarten, which has 124 rooms and suites, is now taking bookings for its opening sometime in June.
