IslandsCaribbean Weekend ed. 2021-05-28

EDITOR’S NOTE: The UK has adopting a ‘traffic light’ system that categorizes destinations into ‘green’, ‘amber’ and ‘red’ lists. Britons can travel to green destinations, without quarantine upon return. No leisure travel is permitted to amber destinations. And, only returning British or Irish citizens can enter the UK from red destinations.

Our headline, taken from the Evening Standard, reads: “Caribbean Islands Among Destinations Likely To Be Added To Green List”. This “green list” is expected to be revised in the week prior to June 7: The British Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Kitts and Nevis are likely be added to this list, due to their low infection rates.

All Caribbean countries were placed in the ‘amber list’. The Cayman Islands is so classified, despite having a vaccination rate almost double that of the UK and no community transmission of COVID-19 since last year. The Dutch Caribbean island of Saba may also have a case, having more than 85 percent of its population already vaccinated.

The Rosewood Little Dix Bay Resort, in the British Virgin Islands, is well positioned to take advantage of an upgrade in classification having made Travel+Leisure’s 2021 ‘It List’ of the best new or renovated hotels in the world, that debuted last year. Finally, Anguilla could also benefit from this upgrade, as it reopening its borders to tourists on May 25.
