IslandsCaribbean Weekend ed. 2021-06-04

by | May 28, 2021

EDITOR’S NOTE: Mid February, our sister publication #HealthCaribbean featured Jamaica in their edition 2021-02-22 and introduced a medical tourism project on that island. A week later in their edition 2021-03-01, they introduced medical tourism projects in Cayman Islands. This newsletter features medical tourism, and covers Jamaica, Cayman, and Dominican Republic.

Our headline, taken from the Jamaica Gleaner, reads: “MOU Signed For Medical Tourism Zone In MoBay”. University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, and the pharmaceutical Bioprist Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a US$17 Million health and wellness-focused economic zone for medical tourism and training in Montego Bay (MoBay).

Two medical tourism projects are proposed for the Cayman Islands. Approval has been granted for Aster Cayman Medcity’s proposed development of a 40-acre site, inclusive of a hospital. But, there has been no further word on the DART/Health City Cayman Islands proposed $100 million hospital, specializing in cancer and neo-natal intensive care.

Finally, Dominican Republic will host the 5th International Health and Wellness Tourism Congress on June 9-10th. This event complies with biosafety guidelines of the World Tourism Organization, and Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Public Health. It will facilitate multi-sectoral integration, innovation, networking, business development and investment opportunities.
