EDITOR’S NOTE: Near the middle of February, our sister publication #IslandsCaribbean featured digital passports in its edition 2021-02-19. Near the beginning of April, #HealthCaribbean featured the Caribbean’s use of technology during the pandemic, and touched on health passports in our edition 2021-04-12. This newsletter features digital health passports.

Our headline, taken from TeleSUR English, reads: “Cuban University Works On Creating COVID-19 Digital Passport”. Cuba’s University of Computer Sciences is currently testing its COVID-19 Digital Passport app. This app has been developed to international standards, and is intended to be loaded unto the cellphones of Cuban citizens.

A global survey undertaken by Amadeus — a travel technology company — revealed that 91 percent of travelers surveyed would be comfortable using a digital health passport on future trips. And, SICPA — a Swiss multinational — has introduced a tool to Dominican Republic which can issue vaccination certificates or health passports to facilitate mobility of the holders.

The European Union and Central American nations are lobbying for health passports, But, Caribbean countries like Jamaica and Guyana are still exploring their options; though the Jamaican Minister of Health and Wellness — Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton — has been quoted as saying: “technically speaking, a system is in place” that can be adapted for COVID-19.
