eduCaribbean, Weekday ed. 2021-06-14

by | Jun 7, 2021

EDITOR’S NOTE: At the starting of April, #eduCaribbean featured Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) in the Caribbean in our edition 2021-04-12. We do the same in this newsletter. We cover two countries, namely: Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Three of the five articles are on Jamaica; one on Cayman, and the other on CARICOM generally.

Our headline, taken from the University of Technology (UTech) Alumni Blog, reads: “Celebrating UTech, Ja Alumni: A Digital Roadmap for Using AI in Caribbean Enterprises – Sean Thorpe, PhD”. It congratulates UTech Alumnus and Head of the School of Computing and Information Technology — Prof. Sean Thorpe — on publication of his latest book of the same name.

The government of Jamaica has allocated $321 million, under its Social and Economic Recovery and Vaccine Programme, towards the purchase of digital devices for students in need. Likewise, the government of the Cayman Islands ordered more than 2,500 laptops last year, which will now be distributed to local students previously under COVID restrictions.

CARICOM has directed the region to expedite establishment of the single ICT space, and to facilitate access to broadband, among other things, to improve connectivity. Finally, users of the Jamaica Library Service fell below 500,000 last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so it has resolved to increase delivery of its virtual services islandwide.
