Jamaica has been selected to host the 66th Meeting of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Regional Commission for the Americas in May 2021.

According to Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, who chairs the commission, the decision was taken on Thursday during the 65th meeting of the organisation for the event to be hosted in Montego Bay, St James. #JM

Chairman and CEO of Downsound Entertainment Joe Bogdanovich has revealed that he and his team will be taking the 2020 staging of Reggae Sumfest to the virtual space. The announcement was made via press release on Friday.

In that statement, Bogdanovich expressed that after cancelling the physical staging of the event due to COVID-19, his team began looking into ways they could still maintain a presence. A relationship between Facebook that was forged back in 2019 then led to a decision to host a weeklong list of activities across Facebook and Instagram come July 20.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the European University Institute (EUI), is expected to deepen ties between the Caribbean and Europe and help The UWI protect the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in the European Union (EU).

Signed virtually on July 14, 2020, by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The UWI and Professor Renaud Dehousse, President of the EUI, the agreement includes the establishment of a research centre. That centre will help to promote inter-regional and intra-regional development and encourage discourse on how transnational and global issues impact the Caribbean Region and Europe.

THE University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus will be offering students a mix of face-to-face and online classes when the new school year begins in September in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On June 24, THE revealed its ‘Golden Age University Rankings’ of established higher education institutions across the world that have been around for 50 to 80 years. This category compares institutions established between 1945 and 1967, using the same criteria and methodology as the World Rankings.

A new surgical eye procedure involving the use of the world’s smallest medical devices is currently available at the Cayman Islands Hospital, and doctors there believe it will give patients greater clarity, with reduced risks.

It’s called the Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, or MIGS, and involves doctors placing a set of iStent devices along the inner wall of the eye to reduce a buildup of fluids that cause increased pressure in the eye. #KY

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is warning that some countries could be setting themselves up for a different health crisis as they divert attention from the fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to battle COVID-19.
