Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced today that a Hyatt affiliate has entered into a management agreement with TTS Resorts LTD. for the first Hyatt-branded hotel in St. Lucia.
The 345-room luxury Grand Hyatt hotel is expected to open in 2023 and signifies Hyatt’s continued brand growth into the Caribbean’s leading travel destinations.

The Ministry of Tourism is seeking to create a Supplies Hub that will help to position Jamaica as the premier logistics centre in the region for training and certification of tourism workers, suppliers for cruise and airlines, and resilience and technology support.
Portfolio Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, made the disclosure during the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) virtual staging of its 59th annual general meeting, recently.
He said this would be a response to the cruise companies, which have indicated that they would like to secure supplies from Jamaica as well as additional workers. #JM

The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader Corona, announced on Tuesday a set of initiatives to address the tourism industry’s challenges during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and to ensure that the country is a safe travel destination.

The long-anticipated CARICOM Travel Bubble is now in operation! It went into effect on Friday, September 18, 2020, in keeping with a decision made at a Special Emergency CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting one week previously.
The defining feature of a COVID-19 Travel Bubble is that persons entitled to participate in the travel bubble are not required to take COVID-19 tests nor to undergo a period of quarantine in order to travel to countries that are within the bubble. #CARICOM

Belize, a country on the Caribbean coast of Central America, will reopen its Philip Goldson International Airport on 1 October 2020, as part of its 5-phase tourism reopening strategy.
Travelers will only be permitted to stay in approved hotels, the Belize Tourism Board said.
They will also have to download the new Belize Health App and show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of arrival. #BZ

The Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic yesterday offered its support for the construction of a hotel project to develop tourism in Pedernales, announced last weekend by President Luis Abinader during a visit to that southwestern Province.
According to Abinader, construction will begin as soon as possible and will be in a month when the pre-design of the works (that will be part of the master plan for the tourist development of the area) will be ready, which includes, among other projects, the construction of 3,000 hotel rooms.

If the 2021 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships is given clearance to take place, General Manager of Independence Park Limited (IPL), Major Desmon Brown, is confident that the event could be safely executed at the National Stadium.
This year’s edition was cancelled in March after the first confirmed coronavirus case in Jamaica. ISSA, which also cancelled all high school competitions for the Christmas term as the virus spread across the island, is currently holding initial discussions with its stakeholders on whether the event can take place next year.

Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali, has once again assured that his administration will keep its promise of delivering free university education to students during this present term in office.
“It will be a reality. Within the five years, you will see free university education,” the President said in response to a question from senior journalist Gordon Moseley during an interview Wednesday evening.
While he stayed away from giving a specific timeline as to when the promise will be fulfilled, he assured; “you will get it within the five years.” #GY

Jamaica’s runaway COVID-19 death rate continued on the weekend with a beloved school administrator now among the number of persons dying from the respiratory illness.
Juliet Wilson, vice-principal of Kingston College, died on Sunday morning at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), after being admitted there with COVID-19. Ministry of health data indicate that 67 persons had died from the virus as of Saturday while another deaths are being investigated.

The Cayman Islands’ world famous supermodel, Selita Ebanks, will be making a guest appearance this weekend on home turf when she headlines a charity gala at the Ritz-Carlton. Ebanks, who will be the guest speaker at this year’s #Breast #Cancer Foundation Gala, grew up mostly in Cayman before moving to New York and strutting the catwalks of Europe and gracing the covers of international magazines when she was still a teenager.
“Cancer is something that affects us all,” Ebanks said in a press release from the foundation promoting the gala. “It has no face, size, religion, race or age. Breast cancer is possibly the most serious health issue women face. One in eight will develop some form of invasive breast cancer and until that statistic is no more, I will continue to lend my voice to support awareness to help eradicate and manage incidences of breast cancer for everyone.” KY

Cayman Islands’ Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Lee has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for his outstanding contribution to health services, Governor Martyn Roper announced.
The queen, in her birthday honours list, also conferred on Angela Marie Tanzillo-Swarts, forensic DNA specialist at the Health Services Authority, the award of Honorary Member of the British Empire for her contribution to Cayman’s capacity and ability to carry out wide-scale testing. #KY

The Puebla Group, which includes prominent progressive leaders from 15 countries, endorsed the campaign to award the Henry Reeve Cuban Medical Brigade the Nobel Peace Prize.
In a statement signed by figures such as former presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil), Rafael Correa (Ecuador), Fernando Lugo (Paraguay), and Ernesto Samper (Colombia), in addition to several legislators, the alliance states that the Cuban doctors have carried out many missions, such as fighting Ebola in Africa and confronting cataracts in Latin America and cholera in Haiti.
It also points out that in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic today, they are working in 39 countries and territories, including Italy, Nicaragua, Haiti, Suriname, and Venezuela.

The French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe reported 1,041 new cases yesterday, the most since the virus was reported there and more than the Dominican Republic, which has been the epicenter of the virus in the Caribbean.
Guadeloupe also reported 15 new deaths in a day, to move the total dead there to 57. The news comes as Canada warned against non-essential travel to the French Caribbean territory as well as Martinique and French Guiana. #COVID19

Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony on Wednesday, officially declared open the country’s newest state-of-the-art medical facility – the ‘Dr. Collin Boyle Virology Lab’ at the Eureka Medical Laboratory (EML) located at Thomas Street, Georgetown.
The facility, which is the first of its kind in Guyana, offers daily in-house PCR COVID-19 testing, with results in 48 hours, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health.
