EDITOR’S NOTE: Having finished our series on utilities, we now move on to a new series on social infrastructure. This issue is dedicated to housing. We look at four projects from four countries: The Dominican Republic, Guyana, the British Virgin Islands, and Jamaica. And, the articles come from four different sources. Two of our articles come from the Dominican Today.
One of those articles — “Government to Tender The First Lots of the Happy Family Housing plan” — is our headline. The Dominican Republic has developed a national housing plan, dubbed the “Happy Housing Plan”, that specifies housing goals for each province. And, the Dominican Association of Builders and Housing Developers (Acoprovi) has assured the government that its members are up to the task.
The second article — “Housing plans in danger due to increases in construction materials” — however cautions that rising to construction costs is a threat to its successful implementation. In contrast, Guyana has an overall goal of constructing 10,000 houses this year in their housing plan.
Finally, the government of the British Virgin Islands has signed contracts in the amount of $500,000 to construct three housing projects, using two general contractors. And, the Jamaican government’s agency — the National Housing Trust — has committed to investing $57.7 billion to complete 7,043 housing solutions within this financial year, and a total of 8,513 housing solutions overall.
