EDITOR’S NOTE: Approaching the middle of April, #InfrastruCaribe featured air transport infrastructure in the Caribbean in our edition 2021-04-16. We do the same in this newsletter. Five Caribbean destinations are covered, namely: Jamaica, Guyana, The Bahamas, St. Eustatius, and Grenada. Additional content may be found on our Twitter feed (@InfrastruCaribe).

Our headline, taken from the Jamaica Gleaner, reads: “GAP Banking On Respite From Airport Upgrades”. The collapse of international travel during the pandemic has caused huge loss of revenue to Pacific Airport Group (GAP), so it is seeking an extension of time on some of its mandatory capital development spending for Jamaica’s two largest international airports.

Expansion of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) in Guyana, as described in the original contract with China Harbour Engineering Company, is on track for completion by year’s end. Similarly, the $65M expansion of the North Eleuthera airport, in the Bahamas, is proceeding according to plan irrespective of legal challenges to evict its agencies from the site.

The new F.D. Roosevelt Airport terminal building and Aerodrome Flight Information Service Officers tower, in St. Eustatius, is scheduled to be commissioned in June this year. Finally, Grenada has drawn down on a US$67 million concessional loan from China Export and Import to upgrade the Maurice Bishop International Airport, under the “Belt and Road” initiative.
