EDITOR’S NOTE: Mid-April, #InfrastruCaribe featured Water/Wastewater utilities in the Caribbean in our edition 2021-04-23. We do the same in this newsletter. Three Caribbean countries are covered, namely: Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. Jamaica has two of the five articles; Haiti and Dominican Republic have one each, and share one. Our headline, taken from Haiti Libre, reads: “Haiti – FLASH : President Abinader Announces The Construction Of A Dam On The Artibonite River In Dominican Soil”. At a meeting of the Dominican-Haitian bilateral joint commission, Dom Rep President Abinader advised that a dam would be constructed on the Artibonite River next year and that all the studies were complete.
World Bank had approved a loan of US$43.5 million for Dominican Republic to expand and improve the drinking water and sanitation service in two municipalities of the Espaillat province (north). While, the Inter-American Development Bank is funding Phase II works to rehabilitate and extend water supply networks to the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Finally in Jamaica, food manufacturing and shipping conglomerate — Jamaica Producers Group — and investment company — Eppley — have partnered with French, construction and engineering company — Vinci Construction Grand Projects — to design, construct, operate and maintain a water treatment plant in St Catherine that can supply 15-million gallons of water per day.
